All About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Hand Tingling

Identifying The Causes & Early Signs Of Median Nerve Compression

Your hands or wrists may feel different and thus you might be wondering if you have carpal tunnel syndrome. It can make a lot of things difficult, especially for people who do repeated things like typing, but there are treatments for it. It’s important to see a doctor or a Mesa chiropractor early on so that it can get diagnosed and prevent too many hardships in your life.

This is something that can affect people from all kinds of walks of life. Here are ways to go about identifying the causes and early signs of median nerve compression.

Patient Feeling Numbness In Her Wrist Related To Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A Tingling Sensation Is The First Giveaway Of Nerve Damage

This is the first thing that people tend to feel when it comes to carpal tunnel syndrome. It tends to stay, especially when you are doing something like typing. The tingling is a constant in your life and if you don’t see a doctor about it, it could continue to get worse until it becomes numb.

While doing this won’t completely alleviate things until you get medical help, try to open and close your hands as much as possible. Also, try to give them as much support as possible, that means sitting with your wrists on a desk that keeps the wrists from dangling over the edge. Try to keep good posture.

Numbness On Your Wrists & Fingers Is Related To Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Your tingling sensations can move on to numbness. It may feel like they are asleep, but they are not waking up when you move them around. That is because the nerve is being pinched in the sheath. People usually report that they feel numbness in almost all their fingers except the pinky. It affects people differently, though, so if you feel numbness in your hand, go talk to a medical professional or a Carpal Tunnel Chiropractor.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Can Feel Like Pins, Needles & Being Shocked

There are other times that you might feel like there are pins and needles in your hand, like it does when your hand is waking up from feeling asleep. Besides the pins and needles, they can feel like an electric shock is traveling up their arm from the wrist.

What Are The Risk Factors Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The biggest risk factor is doing something repeatedly like hammering or typing or moving your wrists in extreme ways, like drumming. Vibrations from doing this can also cause carpal tunnel.  If you dislocated your wrist or if there is a deformity, you could get carpal tunnel.  Pregnant women can be at risk of getting this. It can also happen if you sleep with your wrists in odd positions.

This can also be a hereditary condition. Yes, people can pass down the chances of getting carpal tunnel to their children. Those who have thyroid conditions or diabetes also have an elevated chance of developing carpal tunnel. As you can see, it is not confined to one particular group of people. Once this has been diagnosed, there are some things that people can do to prevent it from happening or worsening.

How to Prevent a Median Nerve Compression

While it can be hard to fully prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, there are some things:

  • Straighten out your wrists while you sleep
  • Straighten your wrist if you are using tools
  • Don’t curl and extend your wrists for long periods of time
  • Getting splints or hand braces to offer support while you do certain tasks

The best thing that you can do is to be sure to support your hands and wrists in whatever you are doing. That way, you can lessen the chances that the median nerve in your wrist will get compressed.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is very common and it looks to stay that way, especially as people continue to use laptops and computers for their work. It is from repetitive use and rest can usually alleviate it. There are times that surgery might be necessary, but things like acupuncture can help manage it.
